Well, after 40 of life it finally happened to me... I got "Pink Eye"!
I had somehow managed to avoid this particular infection my entire life until yesterday. I woke up with my right eye swollen shut. It was the strangest thing I have ever felt.
It's like the "sleep in your eye" had become some form of heavy duty Super Glue! After wiping it away I was able to slowly pry my eye one with my fingers and take a peek in the mirror. AAGGHHHH! What in the hell had happened to me???
Hide the wife and kiddies, stay inside and lock your doors! It's "The Attack of the Monster Pink Eye!"
I quickly called work to tell them that I needed the day off and then proceeded to call my doctor. Here is what I was told...
Pinkeye, (also called conjunctivitis I found out), is redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and eye surface. The lining of the eye is usually clear. If irritation or infection occurs, the lining becomes red and swollen. Pinkeye is very common and goes away in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment. However, it can be VERY contagious!!!
Then I was bombarded with a bunch of questions:
"Do you have any of the following symptoms?"
Eye redness (hyperemia)? Yes.
Swollen, red eyelids? Yes.
More tearing than usual? Yes.
Feeling as if something is in the eye? Yes.
An itching or burning feeling? Yes.
Mild sensitivity to light? Yes.
A yellowish drainage from the eye? Eewww... Yes.
I guess the answer of "yes" to the last question is what determined exactly what kind of pinkeye I had. (Who knew there was more than one?).
I have "Viral and/or bacterial pinkeye". GREAT!
I was told that it was very contagious and can spread very easily. Since most pinkeye is caused by viruses for which there is usually no medical treatment, preventing its spread is important. Poor hand-washing is the main cause of the spread of pinkeye, (and I thought I was doing so well! Becky even made me buy hand sanitizer to use after all of my jobs to prevent the "Swine Flu" from coming home with me). Sharing an object, such as a washcloth or towel, with a person who has pinkeye can spread the infection.
The doctor did give me a prescription of some eye drops. The only thing I hate about them is that when I put them in it feels like I'm putting drops of acid in my eye because it burns so bad! 2 drops, every 4 hours. And they make everything blurry. So I can't even read or watch TV without straining to see the picture.
The great news is that I woke up this morning with my other eye swollen shut as well.! So I went ahead and started putting the drops in that eye also. But I DO get the pleasure of staying home for the next 3-5 days and do everything in my power NOT to infect everyone else in the house!
I just can't tell you how much I love my life right now! LOL!
Until next time... PEACE!

Ew!
I remember going to the ER early in the morning, thinking we could fix the problem before I had to go to work. I went there because I actually thought I had something IN my eye. The doctor prescribed me an ointment and an eye patch for a few days. When I told him why I was there at six in the morning, he said: "You? To work? An excursion to go to? Not with this eye!"
So I spent the rest of the week at home. It wasn't just that the eye hurt, I didn't feel so well in general.
Get better soon!
LOL, I just realized now, that we both have a pink post today...
Mr. Pee Lee,
Ick.
Get better soon - avoid being around pigs, they have enough hassle to deal with right now.

Oh damn that sucks!!! I am so sorry! I have never had it - and I am knocking on wood!
Wait...is it contagious if I read about it on your blog? LMAO!
I hope it goes away soon and no one in your household gets it. Sounds MISERABLE.
Have you seen Knocked Up??? This reminds me of you. AND makes me wonder how you REALLY got it??

OH, yes, the Knocked Up version of Pink Eye...I love it!
If you haven't seen it, you need to!
Take care of yourself, and stay away from Becky. Or, let her take an infected washcloth to work and leave it on the beeyatch's desk. Just an idea...
I'm surprised the dr didnt tell you to treat BOTH eyes at the same time. If the medicine had been going into both eyes, then it wouldnt have spread over. When it's time to put the drops in, have someone bring you a warm wet cloth to wipe the eyes off with first to help unseal the eyes. Im also surprised the drs didnt tell you to get a sterile eye wash as well. Use the sterile eye drops/wash to rinse out the eye and then add the medicine on top. Make sure everything you touch gets sanitized with either Lysol or bleach and water. Question. I see you said that Becky bought some of the anti-bacterial gel. Did you happen to sneeze or cough on your hands and forget to use the gel? If you did and then wiped your eye sometime after, you could have infected yourself.
Oh hey now, I like Heather's idea....
anything for a day off, eh? ha ha
I still remember that feeling and when you described it I had sympathy pinkeye flashback pain! Get well soon!
Mine must have been different because it worked and I was fine in a few days.
I feel for you with the drops. It was only a few months ago that I finally got the go ahead to stop putting any kind of drops in my eye, bearing in mind I'd been having drops at least three times a day, every day, my entire life. I can't tell you what a relief it is to not have to plan my day around when I need my drops next.
Hope your eye clears up soon.
Oh no poor you, it is VERY contagious, remember NOT to use the same hand towel :)
x
I have something for you on my blog. :)
I just thought I come back and admire that eye...
Okay, that picture is disturbing..lol!
If I've had pink eye, I don't remember. I don't remember much though. :o)
My mom had it so bad back in the 70's that the doctor took a picture of it and it's now at Stanford Univ. as the worst case. Well, back then anyway. I'm sure there have been worse since then.
Good luck with this. Hope you get better soon!!
You know that little thumbnail photo from people's blogs that you can have on your own? Well, I thought yours was a cherry pie! That is, until I looked a little closer and then I recoiled in horror!
I've had pink eye a few times (you can't teach Kindergarten and come out unscathed). I had it in both eyes and I remember just lying there with a ziploc bag filled with ice water over my eyes (it helps). I wanted to die.
The good news is, it does clear up with medication. You can't go to work, for crying out loud! It's highly contagious!!!
Kat
You are EXTREMELY talented if you were able to blog all that with both eyes swollen shut from pink eye. Hope you're all better by now!
